Online Compliance Fitness Curriculum

Project Background: What began with a spontaneous 90-minute in-person meeting among two TiER1ers and a few members of the client’s compliance team led to an opportunity to partner on creating an engaging curriculum that empowers employees to own their compliance training.

In 2019, the organization made a transformational shift in their approach to compliance training. Instead of relying on a traditional hours-based approach that documents employees who complete the training, they switched to a competency-based training approach, which encourages employees to build a strong baseline of policy knowledge, enables them to use good judgement when making compliance decisions, and helps them to discern when complex circumstances require further guidance or advice.

Solution: Together, over the course of six months, we designed and developed a curriculum that included 24 eLearning courses tailored for specific employee groups within the organization. Instead of a “one size fits all” approach to the training, employees only needed to complete the courses that were true for their group. To help learners absorb, practice, and retain the content, all courses adhered to a five-part structure and followed a creative “compliance fitness” theme. Courses included a “Warm-Up” activity, a “Walk Through” workout that built foundational knowledge, a “Step It Up” scenario sequence to practice applying that knowledge, a “Fitness Challenge” with longer, more complex scenarios for learners to practice using good judgment, and a “Cool Down” that reviewed key messages.

Outcome(s): By emphasizing co-creation and collaboration, we relied on an agile, iterative process to create a robust learning experience that was outcomes-based, creative, contextual, and memorable for the learners.

Not only did the program lead to measurable increases in adoption of the new approach, but it also resulted in a positive behavior shift among the 8,000-plus trained employees.

The Online Compliance Fitness Curriculum also won the Life Sciences Trainers & Educators Network (LTEN) Award for the Industry Partnership (Provider) category. The LTEN Excellence Awards are the only professional awards program specifically recognizing excellence, innovation, and performance in life sciences training.

“TiER1 has developed a dedicated, responsive, and deeply knowledgeable team,” says Principal Healthcare Compliance Manager. “They were kind enough to educate us along the way, patiently explain the “why,” and provide creative alternatives whenever we pushed back. Despite the volume of detailed content, the TiER1 team dove right in. As a result, I now have a much deeper understanding of how to create a more engaging learning experience and am quite proud of the final outcome.”

Global Product Launch Curriculum

Project Background: This program used a combination of online and instructor-led learning experiences to engage sales affiliates in dozens of countries. The curriculum makes heavy use of game-based learning, gamification, and simulations.

Challenges & Obstacles:

  • Sales reps were tired of event-based, death-by-PowerPoint lectures.
  • Some stakeholders were initially skeptical about the lighthearted theme since the subject matter dealt with STIs.
  • The budget for the second launch was reduced.
  • The program needed to be easy to implement at the affiliate level.

Strategies to Ensure Success: We implemented a highly competitive, fun, and memorable experience that caught learners off-guard. Through our collaborative design process and pilot of the program, all stakeholders came around and agreed that the theme would work well with the target learners – it really hooked them! We created a theme and framework that served as a “plug-and-play” approach to the second launch.

Outcome(s): The Train-The-Trainer approach led to a 100% adoption rate globally. Prior to launch, this organization identified 15 key accounts they wanted to close business with, and they did just that, post-launch! The learning experience’s theme and framework generated a 33% cost savings.

This program also won two Brandon Hall Awards for Best Use of Games and Simulations and Best Use of Blended Learning.

Revolutionizing Peritoneal Dialysis Patient Onboarding

Project Background: Fresenius Kidney Care partnered with TiER1 Performance to reinvent the overwhelming and technical process of training patients to do peritoneal dialysis (PD) at home. To do this, TiER1 leveraged user-centered design and agile development to transform a paper-based, inconsistent curriculum into an intentional, experience-based learning journey that promotes an understanding of the disease along with application and practice with the equipment and supplies.

Solution(s): Together, we created an online, mobile-friendly platform that facilitates a cohesive experience incorporating the entire care team. The unique co-learning approach means that nurses and patients work through hands-on skill-building tasks together, with patients viewing a facilitator guide to help effectively train the patient.

Innovation through design thinking:

  • Empathy-mapping brings patient and nurse feelings, thoughts, and experiences to the forefront.
  • Learner personas pinpoint experience goals for each audience.
  • XMap organizes content, denoting items to re-use, revise, or create new.
  • A visual experience map brings the learning journey to life.

One platform, two views, for an experience that:

  • Is mobile – accessible on a patient tablet
  • Features a simple and large UI for patients’ training during treatments
  • Plays media directly within the application
  • Uses instructional scaffolding to help build habits
  • Customizes patient curriculum based on equipment and treatment
  • Enables nurses to quickly manage patients and track progress.
